Sage – The guardian of wisdom and the sacred herb of women

There are plants that flatter, and there are plants that lead. Sage (Salvia officinalis) belongs to the second category. With its velvety, silver-gray leaves and tart, clarifying scent, it stands like a rock in the surf of the wild herb world.

Its name says it all: it is derived from the Latin salvare – "to heal" or "to save." On the barren soils of Fartàritx, it develops an intensity that you can immediately feel when you rub a leaf between your fingers. It stands for clarity, protection, and ancient knowledge.

The wise companion of women

In naturopathy, sage is often referred to as the great "women's herb," especially when life phases change.

  • During menopause: When your body's internal thermostat goes haywire, sage is the first choice. It acts like a gentle air conditioner from within. Its ingredients regulate perspiration and can noticeably alleviate hot flashes.
  • Hormonal balance: Sage contains plant-based estrogens (phytoestrogens). It helps the body gently replenish hormonal lows—whether due to irregular cycles or the typical "PMS blues."
  • Relaxation: Its warmth has a soothing effect on the lower abdomen during menstrual cramps and helps to flush out water retention.
  • The Guardian of the Neck

But sage is not only good for hormonal balance, it is also a powerful protector against external attacks. Its essential oils (thujone, cineol) and tannins have strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. If your throat is scratchy or your voice is failing, sage has an astringent and disinfecting effect. It is considered nature's best gargle and strengthens the oral cavity.

A ritual of purification

The history of sage is mystical.

  • Ancient times: "Why should a person die when sage grows in their garden?" – this old Latin proverb shows how highly it was valued. The Egyptians and Romans saw it as an elixir of life for the mind and body.
  • Smoking & protection: Not only white sage from America, but also our native sage has been smoked since the Middle Ages. Its smoke is considered to have powerful cleansing properties. It is used to clear rooms of "thick air," dispel negative energies, and create mental clarity. It is the scent of new beginnings.

Sage on Fartàritx

Our wild sage has to withstand the heat and the Tramuntana wind. This makes it more concentrated and resilient than any garden plant. We use this concentrated "survival power" in our products to protect and strengthen you.
